Historic Celebration: Ordination of the Bhikkhuni Arindama

First theravāda ordination in Spain

On June 25, 2025, a unique and historic moment for Buddhism in our country took place: the ordination of Bhikkhuni Arindama, the first ordination of a Theravāda nun in Spain.

This ordination has profound historical and spiritual relevance. In the Theravāda tradition, the ordination of women as fully ordained nuns (bhikkhunis) has for centuries been very limited or non-existent in many countries, due to interruptions in transmission and cultural barriers. Reclaiming and sustaining this line of female ordination not only restores to women a spiritual right that existed in the time of the Buddha, but also enriches monastic and community life with diverse voices, experiences, and leadership.

That this ordination has taken place in Spain for the first time represents a step towards equity within Buddhist practice, a recognition of the value and ability of women to receive and transmit the teachings on equal terms. It is also an inspiration for future generations of practitioners who will see the opening of a path that was not available before.

Why is it important?

The ordination of bhikkhunis existed at the time of the Buddha, but in many regions its transmission was lost for centuries.

Recovering this ordination in the theravāda tradition gives back to women a spiritual right that is theirs by history and teaching.

It is the first time that a woman receives theravāda ordination in Spain, paving the way for future generations.

It is a firm step towards equity and inclusion in monastic life, enriching the Dharma with diverse voices and experiences.
